The explanation

Key idea Convert the percent to a decimal, then multiply.

To find a percent of something, turn the percent into a decimal and multiply. 18% of 45 is 0.18 × 45 = 8.1.

Mental shortcuts that pay off constantly:

  • 10% is moving the decimal one place left. 10% of 68 is 6.8.
  • 5% is half of 10%.
  • 1% is moving the decimal two places left.
  • 20% is double 10%.

So a 15% tip on $42: 10% is $4.20, half of that is $2.10, add them for $6.30.

Worked example

A $80 jacket is 35% off, then 6% tax is added. Find the final price.

  1. Discount multiplier: 1 − 0.35 = 0.65.
  2. 80 × 0.65 = 52.
  3. Tax multiplier: 1.06.
  4. 52 × 1.06 = 55.12.

Answer: $55.12

Common mistakes

  • Adding a 20% discount and 8% tax into a single 12% change.
  • Multiplying by 35 instead of 0.35.
